Who Are We?
Log Cabin Quilters was first started in 1985. In those days we were a fairly small house group, meeting to sew and exchange ideas, to produce beautiful quilts to give to friends and family or to keep for ourselves.
Where and When do We Meet?
As the group grew larger we moved to meeting in the WI Hut in Hartley Wintney where we had the advantage of using the large tables there to sandwich our quilts. In 2015 we moved from the WI Hut to the new Church Centre at St John's Church in Hartley Wintney with its wonderful light for sewing, its large tables and its very modern facilities. In 2017 we moved to the Lady Kaye room at the Victoria Halls in Hartley Wintney. Unfortunately this room was not big enough so we moved to a larger room, the Edward Hall, also at the Victoria Halls, where we currently meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 2 - 4pm. For more details of how to get to the Victoria Halls go to the drop down menu on our 'Contact Us' page and click on Directions, or for more information about the group choose 'Get in Touch' from the same menu.
What Do We Do?
As you can see from our programme, we are a very informal group. We sew, we exchange ideas, and although not teachers we help sewers who are new to quilting with advice on projects to undertake and from time to time we hold workshops. These are essentially for our members alone. They are run by members, for members and usually stem from something that one of our members has seen or read about. There is no pressure on anyone to run a workshop.
We also sometimes have challenges - click here to see our recent challenges - again, run by group members and we are always amazed at the variation in quilts which are made following the same set of instructions or even colours.
Most years in the summer we have a summer outing either to an exhibition or to a quilt shop when we all spend far too much money and add to that stash that never seems to diminish no matter how many quilts we make!
Until 2011 we held an Exhibition every two years which was scheduled to coincide with the annual Hartley Wintney Village Festival in June. The money we raised was donated to a specific local charity chosen each year by the group. However in 2013 the Parish Council introduced a new event in Hartley Wintney - Culture on the Common - which showcases the talents and skills of local groups and individuals. Log Cabin Quilters decided to take a pitch at this event. With gentle music playing, teas being provided by the WI and a cricket match on the green outside, it is a thoroughly lovely event. It is very well attended and we enjoy a very pleasant and rewarding afternoon. We have been there every year since it began in 2013. Have a look at our Gallery page to see pictures of our stall.
